2016 IJSO TEAM ACHIEVED GREAT SUCCESS

From the 3rd to 10th of Decemberthe 13th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) took place in Bali (Indonesia). With outstanding performance, Viet Nam’s IJSO team claimed 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 2 Bronze medals. 

49 team and 276 students from 48 countries territory gathered to compete in this year’s IJSO. There were 2 teams from the host, Indonesia. Viet Nam’s team was led by Mr. Le Ngoc Quang, Deputy Director of Department of Education and Training of Ha Noi. 6 students of the team competed in Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

There were 167 prizes awarded this year, consisting of 28 Gold medals, 59 Silver medals and 80 Bronze medals. 1 Gold medal and 2 Silver medals were awarded to the team that had conducted the best experiments.

With enormous effort, Viet Nam’s team was able to meet the expectation: All 6 students competing claimed a medal, including 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 2 Bronze medals. The Gold medals were awarded to: Nguyen Ngoc Duc and Phan Minh Duc; the Silver medals were awarded to Nguyen Nga Nhi and Pham Quoc Khanh. All four are students of Ha Noi – Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. 2 Bronze medals belonged to Phan Ha Linh of Ha Noi – Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and Dang Nguyen Tien Dat of Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted.

Viet Nam’s team’s achievements in this IJSO will be the leverage to upcoming international Olympiads in Viet Nam as well as in other countries. In 2017, the 14th IJSO will take place in the Netherlands.

There was no team rankings, but in terms of the number of Gold medals claimed, Taiwan was ranked 1st, followed by India and Russia. Viet Nam was ranked 6th.

During the time of the Olympiad, all teams had the chance to exchange valuable knowledge in education, especially in teaching and conducting research in high schools. The specialty of this year’s IJSO was that the Board of Organization held a meeting dedicated to the teachers and scientists to learn from one another and seek cooperation opportunities.
