In the morning of December 19, 2016, news of Vietnam’s Astrophysics Team’s good results was reported from India- the origin of the civilization of ancient Indus basin. Although this is the first year Vietnam has had the honour to participate in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), the team members’ great efforts and their teachers’s tremendous support paid off with the very first medals after 10 days of the competition, foreseeing a promising future for greater achievements.

The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, IOAA, is an annual competition for high school students. This year, the competition is held in Bhubaneswar, India from December 9th to 19th with a total of 42 teams from different countries in the world. To Vietnamese students, the competition and Astrophysics itself is relatively new. Hence, overcoming the competition’s 4 main parts: theories, observation, figure analysis, and team work presented on paper seemed to be a great challenge for our students, but they soon proved their talents and self-determination. Another reason for the team’s success is the support of their teachers: Mr. Ngo Van Chat, Head of Examination Office of Hanoi’s Department of Education and Training; Mr. Bui Van Phuc, vice-principal of Hanoi- Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, and Physics teacher Le Manh Cuong.

Participating in the competition, in the practice test, the team has the opportunity to enter the star projector room for the first time. That is an unfamiliar and challenging yet extremely interesting experience for the team members, all from class 11 Physics 1 of Hanoi –Amsterdam (Nguyen Tien Nhan, Tran Duc Huy, Tran Quang Thanh, Le Hong Long, Do Le Duy). Along with the team, the teachers debated and gained extra scores for their students. As a result, Tran Quang Thanh got a bonus score of 4.5. All five members of this year’s competition achieve good results, including a Silver and four Consolation Prizes. Tran Duc Huy won the Silver Medal, and the rest of the team – Do Le Duy, Le Hong Long, Tran Quang Thanh and Nguyen Tien Nhan – won consolation prizes.

The prizes above are the initial success that affirms the determination, creativity and scientific research ability of Hanoi-Amsterdam high school students, as well as the recognition, training and nurturing of young talents of teachers from the School Board. We hope that this early achievement will be a strong motivation for Hanoi-Amsterdam students to try harder and make the school proud with their success in other National and International Competition.
