Celebrating Canh Ty 2020 spring festival with students in 6th and 7th grade

On January 18th, 2020, 6th and 7th graders in Hanoi Amsterdam High school for the Gifted had a memorable experience of Canh Ty 2020 spring festival. With the support from teachers, parents and ABA company, the students had the chance to experience traditional New Year customs and participate in many other interesting, helpful activities.

 

The spring festival started with outstanding performances to welcome spring time

At 10:30, students took part in the first part of Canh Ty 2020 Spring Festival: banh chung - making competition. This was a collective contest; not only did it require ingenuity, agility, but also solidarity, cooperation and assistance so that each class could complete their parts.

Before officially starting the competition, each class was given bamboo strings, molds, dong leaves, glutinous rice, beans and pork - essential materials for a traditional banh chung. MC not only meticulously instructed each step, from how to place dong leaves into the molds to place the stuffing, but also modeled step by step. Each class had a guide to help students whenever they encounter difficulties. With intelligence, agility and solidarity, the students were not troubled by this part!

At 11:00, 6th and 7th graders moved onto the next part of Canh Ty 2020 spring festival: grinding banh day. Each class was prepared with a mallet, a big plastic bag, steamed glutinous rice, a bowl of cooking oil, and a bunch of dong leaves to join this event. A member of each team used pestle grinding banh day, and other members supported and took turns when needed. When banh day was well-kneaded, participants changed its shape to decorate and display at their classes’ flat winnowing basket.

At 12:00, morning events ended, while the classes’ stalls in the fair began to officially operate. Each class had different stall decoration and sold different types of goods: from cakes, to traditional “banh”s, to fast foods and drinks. While class 6C chose to sell glutinous rice doughnuts, banh dan toc and Thai tea, class 6B chose soft drinks, sunflower seeds, spicy corn, shrimp-chips, and other lovely souvenirs such as rose pens, necklaces, key chains,... Class 6A were also very creative with balloons and cotton candies.

In the afternoon, the students in grade 6 and 7 started with Ring The Golden Bell contest. Each class had 7 representatives to compete; according to the rules of a familiar TV program Ring The Golden Bell, each question had 4 options to pick; whoever got the answers wrong would be disqualified. BC hall became tense with thorny questions, breathed signs of relief with correct answers, became proud after overcoming a tough question and overjoyed with the final victory.

The spring festival ended with a calligraphy competition. One representative from each class would write “Happy New Year” in calligraphy style on red papers prepared by the organizing committee. After this experience, students had the opportunity to approach nation’s precious traditional custom whenever Tet comes, spring arrives.


Writing painstakingly “Stroke describes personality”!

The cosy and lively atmosphere of Canh Ty 2020 spring festival had dispelled the cold of a year-end day. By playing and learning at the same time with useful and fascinating activities, 6th and 7th graders had gained much knowledge about Tet and nation’s precious traditional customs.
