Hanoi-Amsterdam students winning many high prices in HASEF 2017

The seventh Hanoi Science And Engineering Fair for high school students (HASEF 2017 - 2018) held on 11/30 and 12/1 at Chu Van An High School gathered 80 scientific topics submitted by secondary and high school students, selected from more than 300 sent from many schools to the Organizing Committee. This year, Hanoi – Amsterdam Specialized High School had many great topics chosen for the competition. As a result, the school’s INTEL ISEF team received 3 First, 4 Second and 3 Third prizes. All of the topics that won First and Second prizes will advance to the National Round.

Following up the policy to create opportunities for students to carry out scientific research, technology, techniques, apply knowledge learned to solve real life problems, from the school year 2011 - 2012, Hanoi Department of Education and Training has held a contest for the study of science and technology for high school students. After 6 times, the contest really brings great significance, is the source of many scientific and technical innovations. For many consecutive years, Hanoi students have won high prizes in the international round.

On December 24th 2016, right after the sixth HASEF ended, Hanoi Department of Education and Training launched the seventh science and technology research contest. On October 30th 2017, the organizers had received 325 topics from secondary and high schools.

After elimination, 80 subjects by 153 authors were selected to participate in the city round with their concerns about the Environment, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences and health science ... Among them are 25 subjects by secondary school students, 55 by high school students.

The organizers of the contest said that the number of subjects sent by junior high school students this year has increased dramatically with 142 entries, even from the areas where learning conditions are tough like districts Phu Xuyen, My Duc...

According to the rules of the 7th HASEF Organizing Committee, the teams can take part in the contest in the form of individual or team, working with the 20 scientific research areas that the INTEL ISEF provided. To ensure that the judging is objective, scientific and fair, DOET has established a Steering Committee to directly run activities related to the contest. The Department of Education and Training also invited scientists, academics and professionals in the specialized fields to participate in the 6 groups of judges.

The judging process is carried out in 2 rounds. Afternoon and evening of 29/11 is the first round, marking by field. Each judge will listen to the authors of the presentations in the exhibition area, interview the contestants in the field assigned and grade them according to the approved guidelines. Judges groups would evaluate and select the best projects in each category for the second round to mark on a whole.

In the second round, contestants continued to present and answer interview questions before the panel of judges. The judges examined and discussed among themselves to obtain objective and accurate assessment of the efforts, contributions, findings of each author and group of authors.

Out of 80 topics, 56 excellent ones were awarded by the organizers and officially proceeded to the national competition, including 8 first prizes, 19 second prizes, 29 third prizes. Hanoi Department of Education and Training has also awarded 16 teams with outstanding achievements.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Director of DOET Hanoi praised the passion for scientific discovery and the creativity of students in the capital. The Director also emphasized: The science and engineering research contest HASEF is the beginning of a career in research for each student. It is recommended that the regional departments of education and training, schools, professionals, teachers and students re-evaluate the process of organizing the contest, see what succeeded and what is limited, thereby helping the students choose the learning method with maximum efficiency. The schools, students with topics chosen to represent Hanoi in the national round should continue to complete the research topic, avoid subjectivity and satisfaction. After the competition, the regional DOET and schools should continue with quality teaching and learning, aiming for capability and characteristics development of students; so that all students can apply varied knowledge to solve practical problems, apply theories to life. At the same time, schools, teachers and parents should support and continue to nurture the capability and passion for scientific research of the students.
