On December 26th, the MOET held an Opening Ceremony for the 2022-2023 Hanoi Science and Engineering Fair (HASEF). The attending students were excellent contestants who overcame thousands of competitors to advance to the interview round—held from the 26th to the 30th of December at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School. With 84 promising projects in 4 main scientific fields (Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Microbiology, Behavioral and Social Sciences), this year’s contest has the potential to hold many innovative and high- quality products, marking a strong return of faculty research and innovation competitions after nearly three years of the pandemic.

The Opening Ceremony of the City-level Science and Technology Competition

HASEF is a city-level science and technology competition taking place in Hanoi. It is held annually to kindle high school students’ passion for science and innovative technologies as well as applying their knowledge of these subjects to practice. This is also an excellent opportunity for students to unleash their creativity and improve their own skills and qualities. Then, they can realize their ideas, practice general education skills and plan out their future career path.

In this year’s city-level round, there were 84 projects in 4 main areas: Physics (32), Chemistry (10), Environmental Microbiology (22) and Behavioral and Social Sciences (20). Previously, abstracts of each research topic from 84 teams were sent to scientists for preliminary assessment of research methods, creativity and implementation of the project.

As planned, from the 26th to the 30th of December, teams and contestants would be interviewed directly for their ability assessment. It was also an opportunity for them to interact and learn from professional scientists in their fields of research. Likewise, scientists from universities and research institutes could meet and guide high school students. The judges of the contest were leading scientists in their own respective fields. They would select the best projects of Hanoi candidates to participate in the National Science and Technology Competition.

In this contest’s Interview Round, the students will have to explain the urgency of their idea and formulate a design plan with complete parameters and variables. The judges will also evaluate them based on systematic data analysis and application of mathematical and statistical methods that suited the prototypes when experimented under a variety of testing conditions. Creativity, presentation and interview responses of the teams are also included in the scoring criteria for the exam.

Le Tran Hai Dang (12 Math 2 of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School) was chosen to speak on behalf of all contestants. In his opinion, the journey to HASEF was an unforgettable learning experience because here, he could turn theory into reality and create one-of-a-kind innovations. With the support from teachers, schools and the MOET, he made a promise to strive for the best results and bring glory to his school and his family.

Furthermore, to ensure impartiality, a team of MOET inspectors was founded per Decision No. 415: The City-level Science and Technology Contest would be under their supervision from June 13th to the end of the contest.

The contest took place from the 19th to the 26th of December, depending on the subjects. On December 30th, the Judge Panel and the Organizing Committee would hold a meeting to select outstanding projects for the contest. In 2022, there were 2 projects of Hanoi students in the contest held in the United States with high prizes.
